Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t transform your life. On January 6, 2009, I walked into my local gym, ready to transform my life. I told my new trainer that I wanted to reach my 50th birthday as a fit and strong woman. 12 years later, my life is definitely transformed in ways I couldn’t imagine. Not only have I done crazy shit like compete in 25 RX1 Races, but I’ve run a bunch of races, including half-marathons.
How did I, a former non-athlete do this?
Just watch me!
I accomplished these athletic feats after herniating two discs and being told that I’d never do another sit-up or deadlift! Oh yeah? That person obviously did I could not know me well. Not only am I one determined woman, but I am also surrounded by the best team.
One of the best decisions I made after signing up for the gym membership, was to get a personal trainer. I could not have achieved my fitness and health goals without my amazing trainer, Mathieu Beauchamp from Le Fitness Loft.
Growing up, I was never athletic. In high school gym class, the non-athletes were often given a choice: do the class or go for a walk/jog. I would often opt to walk/jog the 3 odd miles loop instead of facing whatever daily athletic humiliation the teacher had in store. I did like certain athletic activities. Growing up in Ottawa, I had access to amazing bike paths which I used on a regular basis. I also loved going for long walks. But, I was/am rather uncoordinated so gym class was brutal. One thing I did know was that I loved moving.
The love of movement
Training with Mat reminded me of this. As I got stronger, my self-confidence increased. I was still quite spazzy, but that was ok. We often laugh at my inability to do 2 moves simultaneously. One thing I discovered was that I LOVE doing weights. I love feeling strong and pushing the envelope.
At first, I avoided running. I made many excuses not to run. But, Mat kept coaching me as I overcame poor techniques. His coaching worked! Over time, I learned to love running. Now, I love the freedom of going for a run. It clears the head, removes stress, and increases all the feel-good hormones. Distance and speed don’t matter. What matters is getting out for a run.
Not only did I transform my life at The Loft, but I befriended an amazing group of like-minded people. Over the years, we’ve trained at the gym and socialized outside. What a gift.
What worked for me
So, how did I end up becoming a gym rat in my late 40s? Here’s what worked for me.
- Start small. Two years before joining the gym, I started going for daily walks.
- Spend time moving in the great outdoors. I equipped myself with the proper gear to be outside, no matter the weather.
- Find an activity you love doing.
- If you get a trainer, be sure that he/she has a kinesiology degree. A kinesiologist is a specialist in injury prevention, management of limitations, and performance development.
- Choosing a trainer can be challenging. You will need someone you trust and who is attuned to your goals.
- Team up with a fitness buddy. You’ll have more fun and keep each other accountable.
Time to heal
It will be a while before I run or do any of my favourite workouts. Today, I sit here, recovering from surgery to fix my broken wrist. I slipped on an icy patch four weeks ago when I stepped out for a much-needed lunch hour walk. I was hoping to avoid surgery, but if having surgery means that I can continue training, then that’s the right thing to do.
When the time is right, Mat will be the one to help me regain my full strength. That day can’t come soon enough. In the meantime, I’ll focus on rest, recovery, and gratitude.
